Oh my goodness, where do we begin? In our “About” section, we mentioned that periodically we’d be writing about women who kick ass, but we will be updating that to include men because we simply must proclaim our admiration for Mick Foley.

If you are not a wrestling fan, you may not be super familiar with the name. Mick Foley is a professional wrestler, wrestling with all the major organisations – World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW),  the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), and most recently Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA).

He is known for his hardcore matches. Has he been hit in the face with a 2×4 covered in barbed wire?  Sure.

Has he taken a fall from the TOP of the cage during a cage match? Yes.

Was it ever uncommon for him to spill thumbtacks all over the ring during a match, only to end up with dozens in his own skin? Nope.

So why are we writing about this guy?

Because Foley is also an activist.  He first popped up in the news in 2009 when he was on the Daily Show offering protection to Will Phillips.  At the time, Will Phillips was 10, and refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance at school because he did not want to a say a pledge to a flag and a country that discriminated against gays.  When he started to get a more than considerable amount of flack for this at school, Foley stepped in as Senior Asskicker and offered protection.

He is also heavily involved with RAINN.  He began as a donor, and then became a weekly volunteer for their online hotline.  Read why he is involved and calling for all of our help here.  We would paraphrase, but Foley happens to be an excellent writer.

He is now launching a Twitter campaign, and I encourage you all to participate.  There are several ways you can donate:

  • donate $10
  • donate $10 a month
  • donate $100, and get an autographed picture
  • $250?  He’ll call  you!
  • $5,000?  HE WILL MOW YOUR LAWN.  (But if you already have a capable landscaping service, he’s more than happy to just hang out).

In addition, if you want to get your read on – 100% of the proceeds from the advance for his latest book, Countdown to Lockdown will go to fantastic organizations  50% will go to RAINN, and the other 50% will be going to ChildFund International.

For further information, please follow Mick Foley on twitter and donate today!
